Lampwork, Holiday & Woodsy Ornaments

Description: Students will learn a fun double buttonhole technique with jewelry cord on a metal ring and then stitch treated long leaf pine needles with waxed linen thread to create the most fun and decorative ornaments.  Students will have the choice in class to create their ornament with either a jewelry grade lampwork bead or a glass winter/holiday bead as the focal centerpiece.  Since there is only time to make one ornament in class, the instructor will discuss and display all the ornament varieties.  The students will receive a complete tutorial along with all the necessary supplies to make the other focal bead ornament that wasn’t made in class, as well as the “woodsy” style ornament with a black walnut slice at home.

Students Should Bring: A pair of sharp scissors and needle nose pliers

Ridin’ the Wave Punk Style

Description: Steampunk is a subgenre of the steampunk movement in science fiction. It is a mixture of the Victorian era's romantic view of science in literature and elements from the Industrial Revolution in Europe during the 1800s. Students will learn to create this wonderful punked sea turtle from gourd and gourd pieces. They will start the “steam punk” process by adding silver foil to the already prepared turtle blank (students will be given templates for turtle front/back fins). They will learn how to create a tarnished, metallic, riveted look. After completing the turtle, they will then apply stain color of choice. Next they will start adding the Turtle’s punk embellishments with pieces of old jewelry, wire, cogs, washers, charms, coins, gears, wheels, etc. You can embellish your Punked Turtle with a little or a lot. You are limited only by your imagination and creativity.

Students Should Bring: scissors (bring those that can get sticky not your good ones), paint brushes, old jewelry if you like (this will be cut up), DAP Rapid Fuse All Purpose Adhesive (this can be found at Lowe’s or Home Depot), apron, jewelry cutters/pliers.

Mini Drums

Description: Students will learn to make 2 small ornament drums.  Stain the gourd and paint a small design.  Learn to place the drumhead on the gourd and lace the drum head to the gourd.  You will also add decorative beads.

Students Should Bring: an apron/smock to protect their clothes, pencil, water basin, and brushes.  (Brush sets (10 brushes in set) are available from the instructor for $18.

Blowin’ In the Wind

Description: Students will learn how to create a beautiful wind chime for their house or garden. .  Paint this windchime using the Donna Dewberry one stroke technique with Connie, one of her Certifying Masters. If you have ever wanted to try this fabulous technique, come take the class with Connie. Students will then seal with polyurethane and attach the wind chime  inside the gourd.  Students should be able to complete the entire project in class.

Students Should Bring: Donna Dewberry paint brush starter set, water basin, pencil and an apron. (Brush sets (10 brushes in set) are available from the instructor for $18)

Decoupage Giraffes with 3 dimensional accents

Description: You will learn a different technique for background finish, how to use rice paper or napkins to decoupage, add dimension with silk ferns and tea bags.  May be given a choice of gourd shapes.  And if time permits, will make a stand using Tyvek and napkin ring.

Students Should Bring: A toothbrush, scissors and small, flat paint brush and hair dryer in case . . . Also if we have time to make the base you will need a heat/embossing gun.

Leaf Print Painting

Description: Use leaves and paint to create prints on the gourd and finish with fake leaf wire.

Students Should Bring: aprons or clothes that might get painted accidentally, any veiny leaves you like.

Mudding Flowers and Leaves

Description:Beginning class for mudding. Students learn proper use of supplies. Practice and then mudding on gourd. Practice before putting on gourd. Cost of kit included in class fee. Teacher provides Margot Clarks Mudding Kit which you will take home at the end of class. If you sign up for more than one of the mudding classes the kit fee of $38 will be deducted from the class fee as you will only need one kit for the classes.

Students Should Bring: Gourd base coated with acrylic paint, water basin or cup, paper towels, everything else is in kit.

I Heard it on the Gourd Vine

Description: Learning to carve Gourd vine.  We will be creating a gourd vine on a bowl.  This class includes wood burning and carving.  We will start with placing the design on a whole gourd, wood burning for shading and detail, basic carving of the design, taking out the background and some smoothing.  We will not be able to completely smooth the whole background but detail instructions will be given.  Finishing will include cutting off the top, staining and sealing the bowl.

Students Should Bring: Dremel type tool, not battery operated because they don’t have enough power as well as a variety of carving bits; thermostatic controlled wood burner with writing tip and shading tip.  I usually use Colwood “C” and “J” but small, medium and large ball will work or other brands for detail and shading.  I have several Dremel type tools and small carving bits, wood burners and tips but not enough for the whole class.

Going for the Tight Roll

Description: Come learn to create this dramatic look for a gourd.  Learn to roll reed into a beautiful walled bowl. Students will use a cut canteen for the base and smoked reed for spokes. The instructor will provide a variety of dyed reed for the rolls.

Students Should Bring: Bucket, sponge, bath towel, needle nose pliers, basket or pruning shears, and any basket tools they have on hand.

Cute, Colorful Seahorse

Description: In this class, students will learn how to make a cute little seahorse sculpture using spinner and banana gourds.  They will cut the spinners and attach them to the bananas using Quikwood.  Using wire and Quikwood, they will sculpt and attach the mouths and tails and add the fins.  Once the clay has hardened, they will paint their creations.

Students Should Bring: a rotary tool (e.g. Dremel or equivalent), sanding burrs, a small drill bit, and an apron/smock
