Poinsettia Pine Needle Ornament

Description: Students will use waxed linen thread to stitch prepared long leaf pine needles to a finished double sided wood center to create a unique and fun ornament with lampwork and glass seed beads for holiday decorating or gift giving.

Students Should Bring: A pair of sharp scissors and needle nose pliers

Bobblin’ Bob

Description: Come create this wonderful bobbleheaded snowman with
Terry and Sandy. Students will learn how to make the snowman from gourds and attach wire arms.  They will then give him a scarf, hat, nose and  feet.  They will then learn the technique to attach his head to his body and make him “bobble”  Students will then paint he snowman, add a snowball in his hand and even some snowballs at this feet.  What a wonderful, old-fashion creation.

Students Should Bring: apron, water basin, old paint brushes

Feed the Birds

Description: Students will learn how to create a beautiful poppy birdfeeder for their house or garden. .  Paint this birdfeeder using the Donna Dewberry one stroke technique with Connie, one of her Certifying Masters. If you have ever wanted to try this fabulous technique, come take the class with Connie.  Students should be able to complete the entire project in class.

Students Should Bring: Donna Dewberry paint brush starter set, water basin, pencil and an apron. (Brush sets (10 brushes in set) are available from the instructor for $18)

Gourd Top Bird House

Description: The birdhouse is woven using round and flat reed, attached to a painted gourd top with a woven finish.  Student should have beginning basket weaving skills.

Students Should Bring: Students will need nippers or scissors and a spray water bottle

Butterfly Filigree-controlled filigree

Description: With a variety of butterflies and flowers to choose from, students will select their patterns and place on the gourd.  We will be wood burning including shading, then carving patterns and areas to filigree.  Select filigree will be used on the choice of butterflies and flowers.  Colored pencil may be added to enhance the flowers.

Students Should Bring: Dremel type tool, not battery operated because they don’t have enough power as well as a variety of carving bits; thermostatic controlled wood burner with writing tip and shading tip.  I usually use Colwood “C” and “J” but small, medium and large ball will work or other brands for detail and shading.  I have several Dremel type tools and small carving bits, wood burners and tips but not enough for the whole class.

Kudzu, Aluminum, Batik

Description: Are you looking for a class that is unusual, different and exciting?  Well, then this class is for you.  This class is about combining unusual material for weaving.  The woven gourd will use smoked reed for the spokes and a combination of kudzu, aluminum and Indonesian Batik for the weavers.  Kudzu is the vine that has invaded the East Coast, smothering everything in its path.  Indonesian batik is a soft cotton that the design is strong on both sides of the fabric.  The instructor will supply students with a gourd that has already been cleaned, sealed inside, and spokes inserted.  The class time will be used in weaving the kudzu.

Students Should Bring: bent needle nose pliers

Day of the Dead

Description: This is a good class for Beginners or new Intermediates and so much fun.  We will be using metallic acrylic paints and black Sharpie pens.  You will receive one mask and three mask patterns to choose from and use later.  We will go step by step.  So it will be easy to keep up.  Then we will talk about the holiday and where it comes from.  If you want to experiment with the new Gourd Master Fili-Point burr to make micro-filigree, and cut out your eyes and nose you can.  You will also get the elastics with the metal tips to add to your mask so you can wear it.  You should finish one gourd mask.  Masks are 7” tall.  You will receive directions to make the wreath and more gourd masks will be available. 

Students Should Bring: 2 new sharpie permanent markers, fine points and 1 extra fine pint, Nitrile disposable gloves, water cup and #1 or #01 fine paint brush for painting the fine details on the masks, gray tracing paper to transfer pattern to gourd, and good eraser (kneaded eraser).
