Washi Fan-purse

Description: A canteen gourd will become a purse with a washi paper fan and embellishments.  Students will select a canteen gourd and prepare by cutting and cleaning.  We will design a fan shape with an array of washi papers and ornamentation.  Cordage and leather hinge and fancy closure will complete the project.

Students Should Bring: sharp paper scissors.

Gourd Nite Lite

Description: This is a great beginning gourd class.  The student will learn to mark, cut and clean a gourd.  Next, the student will paint the exterior of the gourd and seal it.  There will be various shells and glass rocks to fill the gourd and an LED votive candle included with the class.

Students Should Bring: jig saw (I have one I can share), scrapers to clean inside the gourd (I have tools to share), paint brush ¾” flat or any flat brush (I have extra brushes)

Flutter-By Light

Description: In this class, students will learn how to use “Stick n Burn” to burn their butterflies onto their gourd, using pre-printed patterns provided by the instructor.  They will also learn how to condition their gourd with Formula 49 and color the butterflies with ink dyes.  The instructor will demonstrate blending and shading to attain a lovely “painterly” effect.  After heat-setting the gourd, the students will apply a coat of varnish and will then drill and insert Turkish Beads in their desired patterns.  Once the project is complete they will assemble and insert the luminary kits into their gourds.

Students Should Bring: an adjustable-temperature wood burner with their favorite pen/tip for outlining patterns; a drill/rotary tool with the following size drill bits: 9/64”, 5/32”, 7/32”, 7/64”,m and 19/64”.  NOTE:  Students can purchase these bits in a set from bluewhalearts.com, a heat tool (not a hair drier); a respirator/dust mask; sharp scissors; and an apron/smock to protect their clothes.

Versatile Sea Grass Rim

Description: Have you ever fretted over that finishing touch rim?  Well, this class has an interesting rim for your gourd bowls? This class will teach you the flexibility and creative uses of sea grass.  First you will learn how to create a simple rim of sea grass and then how to expand the rim to add dimension and pizzazz. During class, the instructor will talk about how to embellish the rim with beads or natural materials. The instructor will provide your gourd (a nice 9-10 inch bowl cleaned and painted inside) along with sea grass and you are ready to get started.

Students Should Bring: Drill and and a 3/32 drill bit.
